Treehouse Theatre
Interactive theatre and drama for the history curriculum,
plus story telling, pantomime, festival fun and more...

After a busy winter touring 'Alice in Wonderland' in schools, all-age SEND settings, and family venues, we can't wait to be performing with you all again this summer!

Follow Alice on a madcap adventure down the Rabbit Hole
to a land of peculiar creatures and chaotic fun in this family-friendly panto!
Lost in Wonderland, Alice meets a very late White Rabbit, drinks tea with a Mad Hatter, and dares to challenge the Queen of Hearts to a game of croquet. But Alice will ever be able to find her way home? And what is the making the strange sounds deep in the Tulgey Woods…..
Treehouse Theatre’s 16th annual panto is a colourful and interactive show filled with excitement, laughter and live music, where you can even play a part on stage if you want to. Cheer the heroes, boo the bad guys, and help Alice save the day in this panto-tastic version of Lewis Carroll's madcap classic.
Don't just watch! Up to 30 audience members can volunteer to perform alongside our 4 actors

laugh, join in, gasp, sing along, go home smiling...

-
We stage our performances in a 'three-quarters-round' rather than on a distant stage, allowing the whole audience to see and hear properly. Its a very immersive experience, with the actors surrounded by and interacting with the audience. The action feels VERY close!
-
Around 30 audience members can have a small part in the show, from minor speaking parts to interactive scenery (strictly volunteers only - we never pick on people!). It makes each performance unique to its audience, and adds a layer of fun and involvement far beyond dragging unwilling participants onto stage, or just shouting from your seat. Just turn up when the doors open to join the fun!
-
We are a small company, our cast are very skilled, and every show is written for specific actors to perform using their unique talents....things which make live theatre vivid and exciting. Music is performed live, with instruments played on stage.
-
We write for children, families, and people with disabilities of all ages. Age guide 4+. Shows are 1 hour duration with no interval. We have a 'soft start' during which anyone who's anxious can meet the baddie beforehand so that they can relax and enjoy the show. We all laugh together: there's no jokes which might make you feel uncomfortable in the company of kids.

A note on accessibility
Theatre is best when everyone's invited. All our performances are relaxed and informal, designed to be welcoming to people who might not often go to to the theatre, especially children, families who have a child with SEND, and people with disabilities.
Our 'soft start' gives everyone time to settle, and to meet the cast before the show starts.

We hold performances open to the public which are accessible on public transport, or are right at the heart of the community
we want to perform for, at sensible family friendly prices
All performances include embedded sign language. This is aimed at people with additional needs, to support their understanding, so we use simple sign language such as Makaton, rather than BSL. We have pre-recorded buttons to borrow for non-verbal audience responses, and a tactile bag to help visually impaired people connect with the action.
We welcome everyone to all performances, but 'relaxed' performances are especially suitable for people with learning disabilities and their families and carers, where we aim to bring our local learning disabled community together and create a supportive, social, friendly environment in which to relax and enjoy theatre, meet friends and make new ones.

Environmental Responsibility
We are committed to making all our work as sustainable as possible.
-
We think about how we make set, props and costumes at the design stage, so that we use materials which can be reused or recycled afterwards, building sustainability in from the start.
-
We try to use recycled materials in every part of the making of our set, props and costumes. This includes adapting items from previous shows, borrowing items from other local companies, using local recycling resources such as Dorset Scrapstore, The Honesty Jar, secondhand and charity shops.
-
We promote the normalisation of sustainable theatre design by talking about reuse on our social media, and offering the loan of our set/props/costumes to other companies
-
Transport of our cast is our primary environmental impact, so we carefully design our tours to minimise miles traveled, and explain to venues that this is the reason - thus normalising the importance of environmental impact in tour design.
-
We have piloted touring on foot - see 'The Shaftesbury Tales'
-
We aim to reduce transport impact of audiences by using community venues which can be accessed by public transport or active travel - and we ask about this in our feedback to monitor how we're doing.
-
We have used Green Theatre Book, and Julias Bicycle, to guide our actions with regard to environmental responsibility
-
We warmly welcome suggestions for improvements.
